The Culverhay Air Training Corps (ATC )

  • The ATC forms part of the 'enrichment' programme that takes place on Wednesday afternoons and is provingboth popular and successful in engaging students in real life skills. It is reserved for year 8 to year 10 students. The ATC aims primarily to introduce students to the thrills of flying (gliding and powered) and weapons training with survival skills. Students also learn how to work as a team and enjoy some good old fashioned military discipline, such as basic drill and uniform inspections.

  • The students are supplied with combat kit for which they purchase for a small some of money and are issued with two regular RAF blue uniforms for which they are issued on loan and are required to return them at the end of their cadet career.

  • The skills attained are used as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (Bronze, Silver And Gold) and a BTEC in Public Services which is the equivalent to four GCSE qualifications.

  • Activities to date have included the swimming and fitness tests (required for flying authorisation), shooting practices and two weekends away at a camp in Yoxster to practice vital survival skills such as map reading. Some students have already been flying and gliding and are well on their way to their Duke Of Edinburgh awards. They are also able to attend the local ATC centre on Tuesdays and Fridays for extra activities, and are able to go on the weekends for extra flying and gliding. Cadets may also be offered opportunities for flying and gliding scholarships which will lead to them being qualified to fly solo after completion of their training.
