Music Department - Jaipur Kawa - Brass Orchestra

On Thursday 6th Oct 05 Culverhay School was privileged to be visited by the Jaipur Kawa Percussion and Brass Orchestra from Rajesthan, India again reinforcing the image of Culverhay being a school with strong international links.  The visit was arranged through Astar Recording Label managed by John Hollis, parent of Paolo Hollis in Year 7, and Mr Bailey Head of Music.

During the morning pupils were treated to a short performance of traditional music which raised the roof with its thundering rhythms and melodies.  Pupils were then split into three groups and learned either a percussion, vocal or brass part from the song ‘Goray, Goray’ meaning ‘Hello’.

This culminated with a joint performance with the pupils and the Jaipur Kawa Percussion and Brass Orchrestra in the afternoon which was outstanding.  Some pupils even learnt some traditional dance movements and demonstrated these admirably to the music.

I am sure that even who took part agrees that it was a tremendous day and Culverhay looks forward to a return visit by the group in the next two weeks to perform a longer section to the whole of Keystage 3.  Watch this space.

Also after the October holiday we will be privileged to be joined by Asere a latin group from Cuba well renowned around the world.
