Culverhay School Geography Department

GENERAL

The Geography Department consists of two Geography teachers and forms part of the Humanities Faculty that is made up by two History teachers and one RE teacher.  We all have our own classrooms in the same building that we share with the SEN Department.

AIMS

The aim of the Department is to bring “the real world into the classroom”.  Our teaching methods are therefore varied, interesting and challenging.  We believe fieldwork to be integral to our teaching and take boys on a number of different fieldtrips including the Dorset Coast and the Natural History Museum in London.  These enable students to prepare for external exams and adult life; we encourage them to take responsibility for their learning, and to review the work they have done.  We use a range of excellent textbooks, resource sheets, maps and videos that help students to develop their general literacy and numeracy skills.  We also involve students in project work, enquiries and role-play exercises that encourage empathy and decision making skills.  IT is used in Geography for students to gather information and present material in a clear and organised manner.

HOMEWORK

Our policy states “ each student has an entitlement to homework on a regular basis according to his needs”.  We believe homework is essential to enable students to further their knowledge and skills in the subject.  In particular we expect homework to help students to develop their organisation and study skills to cope with the increasing demands made of them during their school career.
